Glossary of "Dirty" Words
- aerate - a process of opening the soil, reduces compaction, and improves water absorption.
- Annelida - Segmented worms - earthworms belong to this phylum
- clay - moist sticky earth, mud, a sedimentary material with grains smaller than 0.002 millimeters in diameter
- clod - a lump of dirt or clay
- decompose - to rot, decay, a process of composting.
- dirt - loose earth, soil
- earth - soil, dirt
- erosion - wearing, weathering, washing away
- farmer - a person who raises living organisms
- geophagy - what it is called when people eat dirt.
- humus - partially decomposed organic matter; the organic component of soil
- loam - Loams are soils composed of sand, silt and clay. It is gritty, moist, and retain water easily.
- manure - manure is feces or otherwise known as ka ka, shit, doo doo ... commonly composted and used as a garden additive and fertilizer.
- megadriles - big worms, (such as earthworms)
- microorganism - microbes in soil which assist in recycling organic matter
- mould or mold - loose rich soil
- moulder - or molder decay, breakdown, rot.
- muck - either refers to a soil in the consistency of mud or the term used for when one is cleaning out the barn or a horse's stall. "whew, what are you doing" "I am mucking Champ's stall."
- mulch - a protective covering of rotting vegetable matter spread to reduce evaporation and soil erosion.
- nematode - another word for worm
- organic - involving the use of fertilizers or pesticides that are strictly of animal or vegetable origin
- perk - a soil drainage test
- perlite - naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock used in soil.
- porosity - percentage of the total volume of rock or soil that consists of open spaces
- rot - decomposition, especially organic decomposition, decay
- silt - matter that settles and accumulates on the bottom of rivers, bays, etc.
- silty - full of silt
- sod - (uh, no, not the Brit term) a section of grass covered surface soil held together by matted roots
- soil - rock and mineral particles mixed with decayed organic matter (humus)
- terra firma - solid dry land
- tilth - the soil's general suitability to support root growth
- topsoil - The cultivated upper surface of soil
- vermicompost - worm compost, vermicast, worm castings, worm humus or worm manure
- vermiculite - Sounds nasty doesn't it? Say it. go ahead. It is used as a soil conditioner or amendment. It is usually added to change the density or consistency and absortion of planting soils.
- vermiculture - the farming of earthworms and their byproducts.
- worms - Do you have worms? Do you? You should you know. Worms are critters that are very useful in many dirty respects. They fertilize and areate soils. They help break down matter in the composting phase. They wiggle. Some say they are cute. Some find them revolting.
- worm castings - worm manure
- worm farming - keeping earthworms with the goal of collecting vermicompost.
- worm grunting - vibrating the ground by use of a stob, a wooden stake which is put into the ground and rubbed causing vibrations with the goal of driving worms to the surface.

- dirt cheap - a bargain
- get the dirt - find the information on
- dirt bike - bicycle
- here's the dirt - giving information on
- old dirt - old information, not current or useful
- groundworks - the base or beginnings

Wormy swormy, wiggly INSTRUCTIONS Here's a partial list of supplies to gather up in order to get a good start with this project:
- bin - a container that you can make holdes in and a lid
- food for worms - leftovers!
- bedding - garden soil, shredded newspaper - crushed eggshell
